Growing the Good with Food for Thought

At Women for Good, we believe some of the best ways to make a difference start with showing up, working together, and connecting with the people making our community stronger. Our recent volunteer day at Food For Thought in Forestville was a beautiful reminder of just how much good can grow when we come together.

Our members rolled up their sleeves to help prepare their garden for Fall. We planted lettuce, prepped garden beds, created new signs, and cared for the thriving ecosystem that will soon produce fresh, organic food for our Sonoma County neighbors. There was plenty of teamwork, learning, and dirt under our fingernails!

Nourishment Rooted in Compassion

Food For Thought provides free, nutritious food and nutrition services to Sonoma County residents living with serious medical conditions. Their work recognizes that access to healthy food is an essential part of health, healing, and quality of life. We were able to start our day with a tour of their food bank, where they provide free life-sustaining groceries, meals and loving support to folks with serious medical conditions.

The organization’s roots go back to 1988, during the HIV/AIDS crisis. Inspired by the simple kindness of a neighbor bringing groceries to someone living with AIDS, local community members came together to address a critical need. What began as a grassroots effort to nourish neighbors affected by HIV/AIDS has grown into an organization supporting people facing a range of serious medical conditions, while maintaining its founding values of dignity, compassion, and community care.

Today, Food For Thought’s garden is one part of that mission, helping provide fresh, organic hyper-local produce to the people they serve. Learn more about their history and programs at fftfoodbank.org.

We Came to Give Back, but Left With So Much More

One of the highlights of our day was learning from Oliver, Food For Thought’s wonderful Garden Manager. From gardening techniques and plant care to the interconnected ecosystem that helps a garden thrive, Oliver shared his knowledge generously and made the experience welcoming for everyone, regardless of gardening experience.

We arrived ready to lend a hand, but left with new knowledge, meaningful connections, and a deeper appreciation for the care that goes into growing food for our community. It was a wonderful reminder that volunteering is about more than the work we do. It's also about what we learn and how we grow together along the way.

A huge thank-you to Oliver and the entire Food For Thought team for welcoming us into your garden and sharing your knowledge with us. We are grateful for the work you do to nourish our community and for the opportunity to be part of it.

We had an incredible day and can't wait to come back!
